FAQ

Which Honeycomb mode is best for a first playthrough?
Scientist is the mode Frozen Way labels as recommended and balanced. Choose another mode only when its stated rules match the experience you want.
Which Honeycomb mode has permanent death?
Space Hell is the hardcore mode described by Frozen Way as having permanent death.

Which difficulty modes does Honeycomb have?

The official launch announcement lists four modes. Their descriptions below are limited to the rules Frozen Way published; this page does not invent hidden multipliers or exact drain rates. (Official launch announcement)

ModeOfficial positioningWhat is confirmed
ScientistRecommendedBalanced adventure and exploration experience
SurvivalistFor veteransVital stats such as immunity deplete faster
Space HellHardcoreUses the punishing Survivalist-style mechanics and permanent death
EngineerCustomLets the player tune gameplay parameters, including building costs, stamina and immunity drain, animal aggression, river force, and material occurrence multipliers

Which mode should a new player choose?

Scientist is the safest starting point because it is the developer-recommended balanced mode. It leaves the core loop intact while you learn scanning, food, water, base building, and research. The beginner guide explains that opening loop without assuming a particular difficulty value.

Survivalist is better suited to players who already understand their return routes and supply planning, because the official description says vital stats deplete faster. Space Hell should be treated as a separate challenge: a mistake can end the run permanently.

What can Engineer mode change?

Engineer is the custom mode. The official announcement specifically mentions options for building costs, stamina and immunity drain, animal aggression, river force, and material occurrence multipliers. Use those settings deliberately and record them when reporting a test result; a custom rule set cannot be used as evidence for default Scientist behavior.

The immunity guide explains the system concept, while the base connection guide covers normal building dependencies. Neither page treats custom-mode settings as universal mechanics.

For a post-launch route through food, water, research, the first base, immunity planning, and the three early hotfixes, use the Honeycomb launch guide. The official update record is in the patch notes.

What remains unverified?

The launch announcement does not provide a complete numerical comparison of hunger, thirst, health, immunity, stamina, resource occurrence, or animal behavior between modes. Those values require screenshots or repeatable tests from the current build and should not be presented as a fixed difficulty table yet.
